KUCHING (Oct 6): The Sarawak government is embarking on a RM87 million flood mitigation project within the Stampin Resettlement Scheme, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

Yap, who is also SUPP deputy treasurer, said the project was an essential infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing flood-related concerns and strengthening flood mitigation measures in the area.

“The project reflects the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to improving flood resilience and upgrading essential infrastructure for the benefit of local communities,” he said in a statement issued after chairing the Kick-Off Meeting and Dialogue Session for the Stampin Resettlement Scheme Flood Mitigation Project here on Monday.

The meeting involved representatives from the state Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), consultants, contractor and the local community.

Yap said the meeting was vital to ensure that all parties involved have a clear understanding of the project scope, implementation requirements, responsibilities and expected outcomes from the outset.

“A project of this scale requires close coordination between DID, the consultants, contractor and the local community.

“We must ensure that the project is properly implemented, that technical requirements are complied with, and that the concerns of residents are taken into consideration throughout the construction period,” he said.

Yap also emphasised that community engagement must be an integral part of the project, particularly for a flood mitigation project that directly affects residents and their daily lives.

The dialogue session also provided an opportunity for residents and community representatives to raise their concerns, seek clarification and provide feedback directly to the implementing agencies, consultants and contractor.

Yap stressed that the focus must ultimately remain on effective delivery and tangible results for the people.

“For the residents of Stampin Resettlement Scheme, this is not merely an infrastructure project.

“It is about reducing the risk of flooding, protecting homes and property, and providing greater peace of mind for families living here.”

He further called on all parties to maintain open communication and to promptly address any issues that may arise during implementation.

“As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, I will continue to follow up closely with the relevant agencies to ensure that this RM87 million project is delivered properly and brings tangible benefits to our residents,” he added.
