KUCHING, May 21: The total scheme value of the flood mitigation project for “Rancangan Tebatan Banjir Sungai Miri, Sarawak Phase-1” and “Rancangan Tebatan Banjir Miri, Fasa 2” stands at RM50 million, exceeding the ceiling allocation of RM5 million under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP).

According to Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government I (Public Health and Housing), Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, the RM5 million allocated under the 12MP is only sufficient for the detail design services, survey works, and a partial land acquisition.

He shared that Phase 1 flood mitigation project, which commenced under the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) in November 2023, was valued at RM25.655 million.

The scope included the construction of two pump stations at Jalan Miri Lutong (beside the Lutong bridge), and at Jalan Permaisuri (next to the cemetery at Sungai Baong), with the aim of mitigating the flood issue at Kampung Pangkalan Lutong and Jalan Jee Foh.

“In addition to this project, Rancangan Tebatan Banjir Miri, Fasa-2 has also been approved under MP12,” said Penguang in response to Pujut’s assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang’s question during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

Penguang shared that the detail designs for the second phase have been completed, and the project is expected to be tendered by the last quarter of 2025. It will benefit areas including Pujut, Lopeng, and a part of Taman Tunku.

Regarding the key components, Penguang informed Yii that the project will involve deepening and widening of Sungai Dalam, a detention pond, removal of dilapidated structures or obstruction bridges, drainage works, and a riverwall. –DayakDaily
