Sibu residents told to be alert to king tide, heavy rain

SIBU: A king tide measuring up to 3.8 metres is expected on Dec 30, and the high water will remain for 10 days.
Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) here said yesterday that low-lying areas might be flooded with the king tide and bad weather coming together.
“Residents are advised to be alert,” DID Sibu chief Ting Sing Kwong advised, saying the king tide would subside to between 3.3m and 3.4m on Jan 9, 2014.
The highest king tide that hit the town this year was on Dec 5, measuring 4 metres.
The Meteorological Department forecast strong winds and rough seas up to Tuesday in the waters off Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, eastern Johor, Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan and Sarawak, according to a Bernama’s report.
It stated strong north-easterly winds of between 50 and 60 km per hour were expected in the waters off the Pedalaman, West Coast and Kudat divisions of Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan and Sarawak, with waves rising up to 4.5 metres.
Sibu Disaster Relief Committee chairman Sim Kok Kee, meanwhile, assured the public that his committee was well prepared to face any eventuality.
Sibu zone Bomba chief Abdul Mutalib Rashid had also said their men and equipment could be mobilised at a short notice in the event of a flood.
