SIBU (Feb 4): The ongoing flood mitigation project in Sentosa is a crucial step in addressing the persistent flooding in the area, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
According to him, the current floods are likely caused by ongoing construction work.
He added that the flood situation is also influenced by Sentosa’s natural geographical features, which include a basin-like terrain and numerous low-lying areas prone to inundation.
“Once Phase 1 is completed, which is expected this April, we will proceed with Phase 2. The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) is currently designing the next phase,” he told reporters after visiting the project sites today.
During the visit, Chieng was accompanied by council members, community leaders, and several officials to assess the affected areas.
He stated that the water level at Sentosa today was still very high, with some areas reaching two feet of water.
“Additionally, for the first time, water had entered some of the houses,” he added.
On the relocation of affected residents, Chieng stated that for now, there is no need for them to move to the temporary relief centres (PPS).
“Most residents prefer to stay on the upper floors of their homes or seek shelter with relatives rather than moving to the PPS,” he said.
He also acknowledged that this situation has resulted in many flood victims being ineligible for financial assistance.
“I have submitted an appeal to the Premier regarding this matter, and I hope that aid can be provided on a case-by-case basis,” he said, adding that he will meet with the Sibu Division Resident tomorrow to discuss further assistance for flood victims.
