KUCHING (Jan 3): The Sungai Maong Kiri Flood Mitigation Plan (FMP) should effectively address flash-flood issues in Kota Sentosa, said its assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
He acknowledged the community’s frustrations over the recurring floods in the constituency and assured them of his pledge and commitment of resolving this issue.
He said this in a statement issued after attending an earlier technical committee meeting for the Sungai Maong Kiri FMP at the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak here yesterday.
The project, said Yap, would cover several flood-prone areas within his constituency, namely Taman Happy Valley at Jalan Tun Jugah, Taman Hui Sing, Lorong Hup Kee 10, Lorong Durian Burung Quarters, Borneo Garden, and areas off Jalan Lapangan Terbang.
“The flood mitigation plan for Sungai Maong Kiri, which includes a substantial section of flood-prone areas in Kota Sentosa, reflects the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led state government’s commitment to resolving the flash flood issues.”
During the technical committee meeting chaired by DID deputy director Law Wee, the attendees were briefed on the review of the preliminary report prepared by appointed consultant, Jurutera KAC Sdn Bhd.
“The purpose of the preliminary report is to formalise the flood mitigation solutions based on a comprehensive, cost-effective flood mitigation scheme.
“This would include proposals for engineering works, drainage improvement works, structural flood control methods, non-structural flood control methods and landscaping,” said Yap.
He added that the conceptual report, including the design options and cost-benefit analyses for the affected areas, should to be finalised by this Feb 24 for discussion and presentation to DID Sarawak.
The assemblyman reiterated his dedication to addressing infrastructure, traffic, drainage, and housing challenges to ensure the overall development of Kota Sentosa.
Additionally, Yap called upon all Sarawakians to come together and unite, in recognising GPS’ achievements under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
