SIBU (Oct 9): Six flood control gates have been successfully installed at six culverts in Sungai Lebaan area in the West Bank here to improve water drainage flow.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Community Development Team chairman Councillor Kevin Lau said the six flood control gates were installed with the help of Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).
“It will effectively control the speed of the water, especially when the water level of the Rajang River rises as the river water will flow back inland,” he added.
When inspecting the site recently with divisional DID engineer Sia Wee Wo, Lau said the installation of the flood control gates would play a key role in blocking the water from flowing back.
“Due to the water pressure, the speed of the water flow will be controlled, hence reducing the problem of water rising to the roads.”
Lau expressed gratitude to the DID for successfully implementing the project, which would provide great relief to the residents of Bawang Assan.
The flood control gates issue was highlighted to Lau last April when he visited the site and following numerous on-site inspections and requests to the relevant authorities, the project was eventually completed.
