KUCHING (Oct 25): Two Batang Sadong River Conservation Projects have been proposed for implementation in Serian as a long-term measure against floods and erosion there, said Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.

The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change told Parliament in Kuala Lumpur today that the two proposed projects had already been applied for by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) under the Fourth Rolling Plan (RP4) 2024 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP)

“DID had submitted two proposals namely Batang Sadong River Conservation Project in Kampung Hilir and Batang Sadong River Conservation Project in Kampung Hulu. Both are in Serian.

“The projects are applied under the RP4 of the 12MP with cost estimation of RM37 million,” he said in reply to Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.

This was after Riot posed a supplementary question for more details on the proposed projects to solve the serious problem of erosion and flooding affecting villages along Batang Sadong in Serian.

Huang had earlier said the projects involving the construction of riverbank erosion protection structures have been submitted and were now waiting for the Ministry of Economy’s consideration and approval under RP4 of the 12MP.

To Riot’s earlier question, Huang said the ministry through DID had carried out and completed the Batang Sadong Bank Retaining Structure project at Kampung Hilir, Serian costing RM499,000.

He explained the project, which started on July 24 and was completed on Sept 16 this year, was funded by the Sarawak government’s State Disaster Management Committee.

He also said the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change has allocated RM1.34 million under the 12MP for 11 short-term measure works to reduce the risk of floods in Serian constituency.
