KUCHING, Dec 3: The Federal Government has approved the RM2.48 billion Kuching City Flood Mitigation Plan (Phase 2), marking one of the largest flood-control investments in the city.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed appreciation to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof for securing the project under the national High Priority Programme.
“The package includes two new bridges, a barrage, a tidal control gate and a six-kilometre bypass channel, with implementation scheduled from 2027 to 2033,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Dr Sim explained that the project is expected to reduce flood risks in major urban corridors and strengthen resilience for Kuching’s expanding catchment areas.
Separately, RM191 million has been approved for the Integrated River Basin Development of Sungai Sarawak, covering three packages: Package 1 in Samarahan, targeted for completion in May 2026, Package 2 in Kuching in April 2027 and Package 3 in Matang in March 2027.
He said both initiatives reflect a coordinated effort to protect Kuching and surrounding districts from recurring floods as development and climate-related pressures grow. —DayakDaily
