KUCHING (Nov 22): A long-awaited drainage rehabilitation project in Taman Happy Valley is finally underway, marking a significant step towards addressing years of recurring flash floods in the neighbourhood.
The initiative is being implemented by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, with Armani Rewards Sdn Bhd appointed as the contractor.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap welcomed the official kickoff of the Taman Happy Valley drainage system repair and upgrading project here on Friday.
The project’s site possession date is set for Nov 24, 2025, with completion expected on Aug 23, 2026.
Valued at RM2.53 million, the upgrade will enhance the drainage system to improve water flow and reduce flood risks.
Yap, who is also SUPP Kota Sentosa Branch chairman, described the commencement as a significant milestone for residents who have long endured repeated flooding.
“Today’s kickoff is a major relief.
“After every heavy rainstorm, I visited the affected areas, raised residents’ concerns, and continuously pushed DID Sarawak to prioritise, tender and approve this project. I am happy to see it finally moving,” he said.
He added that he had consistently engaged with DID Sarawak and other technical agencies, submitted residents’ complaints and supporting evidence, and closely followed up until the project was approved and funded.
At the kick-off meeting, Yap also emphasised the importance of the contractor adhering to the project schedule and ensuring high-quality workmanship throughout the implementation phase.
The drainage upgrade will rehabilitate and improve the network within Taman Happy Valley, enhancing water-flow capacity to prevent overflow during heavy rainfall.
Long-term mitigation measures will also be implemented to reduce both the frequency and severity of flash floods.
Yap assured residents that regular updates, including groundwork notices, traffic management information, and progress briefings, will be provided as work advances.
