SARIKEI (Nov 20): The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarikei Division has successfully completed the drainage cleaning works along Jalan Ming Chiang in the Sungai Meradong area.

The project was implemented to resolve longstanding issues of stagnant water, poor water flow, and obstructions within the drainage system, which had previously impacted local residents.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii emphasised that the government remains committed to prioritizing basic rural infrastructure needs, particularly concerning drainage and water management.

“The government is committed to addressing drainage issues, flash floods, and basic infrastructure concerns comprehensively for the wellbeing of the people,” the Sarikei MP said in a statement.

“Such efforts reflect the government’s continuous commitment to ensuring that rural development progresses in a systematic, gradual, and balanced manner.”

The project site was visited yesterday by Huang’s representative Wong Soon Mee, alongside a DID assistant engineer.

During the visit, they witnessed the official handover of the completed project from the contractor to DID.

Huang reiterated that he would continue to advocate for further drainage improvements, road repairs, and basic amenities to better serve the needs of rural communities.
