GEDONG (July 15): The severe riverbank damage along the Gedong Waterfront requires urgent attention, as the situation has compromised public infrastructure and several houses nearby.
In highlighting this, Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee said there had been reports of cracks at the houses and the streetlights leaning dangerously, posing safety risks to the local community.
“We will coordinate with the technical agencies, including the Samarahan Division DID (Drainage and Irrigation Department), to identify the most appropriate recovery and stabilisation approaches,” she said in a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) yesterday.
Last Sunday, Rodiyah was joined by Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak’s advisor Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais in conducting inspection on the site.
Naroden, the special representative of Gedong assemblyman, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, echoed the MP’s concern.

“Failure to address this issue promptly may lead to severe long-term consequences.
“I would propose for the stabilisation works to kick off immediately, probably using concrete embankments tailored to the local terrains.
“I would also recommend temporary relocation for the affected families, so as to ensure that restoration efforts could proceed safely and efficiently.”
The local residents expressed growing anxiety over the situation, urging swift intervention to mitigate further risks to the community, reported Ukas.
