MIRI: The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) organised a community work party to clean the Miri River at Kampung Pulau Melayu yesterday, to mark the division-level celebration of World Water Day 2021.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting, who is Piasau assemblyman, officiated at the launch, with DID Miri Divisional engineer Hiew Si Tien and Kampung Pulau Melayu headman Ketua Kaum Darahaman Sahat among those attending the event.

In his opening remarks, Ting thanked DID Miri for holding such a meaningful activity, meant to educate the public – especially the riverine communities – about the importance of keeping the rivers clean and pollution-free.

“The theme for World Water Day 2021 is ‘Valuing Water’.

“Economic development and the growing global population have significantly increased the demand for water usage.

“Climate change is also a factor.

“How we value water determines how the water is being managed and shared. The value of water is much more than its price – water has enormous and complex value for our households, culture, health, education, economy and the integrity of our natural environment.

“Without any comprehensive understanding over water’s true and multi-dimensional value, the people would be unable to safeguard this critical resource for the benefit of everyone,” he said referring to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which emphasises on ensuring clean water supply and also good sanitation.
