KUCHING: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is reprimanding the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) for the shoddy work on the flood mitigation system in his constituency.

He said last Sunday (Nov 24), he had to call for an emergency meeting with DID and BDA following flash floods in Kampung Assyakirin 2 on Nov 23.

“On Sunday, I was forced to urgently summon the relevant units of the DID and BDA to immediately review plans for the Tanjung Batu beach area and flood mitigation for the Bintulu Boulevard mall.

“With Kampung Assyakirin 2 located in a low-lying area once again facing flash floods in early Nov 23, the residents are understandably alarmed and fearing the worst.

“After inspecting the grounds of the Furama Plaza project (nearby) yesterday, it was clear to me that not only was the drainage gate deactivated, but the drainage system is not within design parameters, making it ineffective in mitigating flood.

“In other words, even with low water levels, the adjacent grounds will be flooded in a short time,” Tiong said in a statement yesterday.

He said he would be calling for an emergency response meeting for flash floods on Nov 28 to review and identify improvements to the flood mitigation controls and plans in the area.

Meanwhile, he said he had pushed for an immediate and thorough review of the flood mitigation system and the entire drainage system in order to find the source of blockage which had caused the system to fail.

“Anyone who has reviewed the existing system will fail to understand why the BDA initially approved the project to occupy the relevant flood mitigation and drainage outlets.

“If the project is allowed to continue, should the Irrigation and Drainage Department upgrade and repair the flood mitigation controls for the future?” he asked.
